Video Platform Symphony Opens Up a Lush New Musical World, Led by 10 Of The World’s Greatest Orchestras

Video Platform Symphony Opens Up a Lush New Musical World, Led by 10 Of The World’s Greatest Orchestras - will launch on sept 24 with Concertgebouw Orchestra

Most people already love symphonic music, the emotional impact and majestic sweep of a great orchestra. They’ve been moved by it in films, video games, and pop hits. Yet they don’t know how much deeper that love can go.

A new, highly curated streaming video platform wants to take them there, deepening the connection to symphonic music’s sounds and worlds. Thinking beyond the sometimes strict boundaries of classical music, Symphony offers both die-hard orchestral music lovers and listeners curious about symphonic music all they need to dive in, presenting highly curated, beautifully produced videos of performances, talks, intimate backstage moments, and other touchstones to guide subscribers toward a new way to hear orchestras.

Symphony will launch on September 24th with a live streaming event of the opening of the worldwide season by the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. Next to the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Symphony will launch with impressive orchestra partners, including Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Budapest Festival Orchestra, and Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. It will be available via popular apps and platforms, including Roku, Fire, and Samsung.

“We were immediately excited to participate in a kind of Champions League of the best orchestras in the world. By working together, we can reach a global audience thanks to a perfect technical platform and marketing budgets that would be impossible for us to meet on our own,” says Executive Chairman Dominik Winterling of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. “Moreover: we are not competitors of each other and share the same passion for symphonic music that we want to share with as many fans worldwide as possible.”

Founder Rob Overman and his Netherlands-based team have handcrafted Symphony’s offerings, in their quest to introduce more people to these orchestras. As an expert in symphonic and orchestral music, as well as a former orchestra CEO and Artistic Director of classical music TV stations, Rob understands the challenges a casual listener faces when dipping their toes in the genre. “There is just so much to share before these events even start,” Rob adds. “Even the biggest symphonic music fan with an established love for the genre can find enlightening content to dive in deeper.”

Symphony connects them with that content, that missing context. Granting unique perspectives before, during, and after the performance, Symphony lets these orchestra partners supplement live concerts with additional materials to expand fans’ knowledge. Their star conductors and soloists will deliver four exclusive and unique live performances a year, complete with storytelling and backstage access, so that the concert hall and greenroom feel as comfortable as a music lover’s living room. Host Dominic Seldis welcomes viewers through commentary that’s as friendly as a good play-by-play at a broadcast sports event, introducing the show and talking through the high points post-concert.

Symphony’s innovation and deep subject knowledge feel like a breath of fresh air for its  partners. Facing unprecedented challenges, as well as new audience potential, orchestras are eager to open up and share. “For us at Budapest Festival Orchestra, Symphony will become the most important platform for all our music on the internet, and we think it's a wonderful idea to combine the forces of all the best in the world on Symphony. For music lovers, it will open a completely new world. With the combined forces of all the partners, Symphony will become a success story,” says Martin Hoffmann, International President of the Budapest Festival Orchestra.

Viewers benefit directly from this openness. They can experience the passion and animation of the conductor’s movements up close, track the intricate pizzicato finger movements of the double bass player, and see the emotion pouring from the piano soloist, in ways not possible in person. They can hop concert halls and experiences in an on-demand format that adds an extra layer of possibility to high-caliber performances.

Discovery flourishes with Symphony. Suggested offerings based on previous viewing guide a viewer through the platform. Playlists are hand assembled by Symphony’s experts and placed on ever-changing virtual shelves, easy to access from Symphony’s initial landing page. Symphony then makes it simple to navigate through a melodic journey, with options to skip forward a movement, or backtrack and listen to a portion again.

“We believe everyone should feel at home with symphonic music, even if they’ve never had a chance to set foot in a concert hall,” Overman reflects. “We want to humanize the music, to break down the barriers, in our preconceptions about music, in our habits, that prevent connection with this music. It’s inspiring to bring orchestras together under one virtual roof, and to bring more and more music lovers into the fold on our platform.”
